How have the museum collections been developed?
Collections constitute the basis of a museum; therefore the primary and most important task of the established museum was the collection of heritage items. After the official foundation of the Estonian National Museum in 1909 heritage collection trips were started. Within the first ten years nearly 20,000 items were collected, about two thirds of them in the years 1911–1913. It was probably exceptional in world history that a museum where the staff worked mainly for free, for the benefit of their homeland, aimed at emptying the whole Estonia of heritage items parish by parish, and succeeded in engaging dozens and dozens of people in this work.
